Sunday Cereal: Eminem and King David

My goal in this post is to further explore the idea I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago. I don’t want to create turmoil over these comments I’m about to make, but I do want to point out some similarities.

How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones against the rock. (Psalm 137:9)

Texas Chainsaw, left his brains all
dangling from his neck, while his head barely hangs on
Blood, guts, guns, cuts (Kill You – Eminem)

Let his life be cut short,
and let another man replace him as leader.
Let his children become orphans
    and his wife a widow.
Make his children wander around, begging for food.
Let them be forced out of the ruins in which they live. (Psalm 109:8-10)

My life will be so much better
If you just dropped dead (So Much Better – Eminem)

Because of your love for me,                                                                                                                              kill my enemies and destroy all my oppressors,                                                                                                    for I am your servant. (Psalm 143:12)

So yeah dad let’s walk
Let’s have us a father and son talk
But I bet we wouldn’t probably get one block
Without me knocking your block off
This is all your fault
Maybe that’s why I’m so bananas
I appeal to all those walks of life
Whoever had strife
Maybe that’s what dad and son talks are like
‘Cause I related to the struggles of Young America
When their **** parents were unaware of their troubles (Rhyme or Reason – Eminem)

There are many more examples on both sides, but I think you see what I am saying.

Now am I condoning Eminem? Not exactly. But I understand why he raps the way he does; he is being honest.

This is exactly how he feels. Even when it makes him sound crazy and psychotic. He says the exact thing he feels. And that’s why people love it.

Because we all feel that way, don’t we?

We get extremely angry when someone cuts us off in traffic… we wish we could run them off the road. There are even times when we want someone to die because we think that would cure our pain. And I think that’s why we have the Psalms. They aren’t all the best theology to live by, but they are the best example of true prayer.

God, this is how I feel.

God couldn’t you just kill my enemies?

Just this once.

I think He desires more that we trust our complete heart and mind to Him, no matter how ridiculous, selfish or evil we may sound. As long as we are honest.
